一年で最も暑さの厳しい頃。The height of summer's heat.

桐始結花 きり はじめてはなをむすぶ 桐が実を結びはじめる The paulownia begins to set seed
土潤溽暑 つち うるおうて むしあつし 土が湿り蒸し暑くなる The ground grows damp and the air sultry
大雨時行 たいう ときどきふる 時に大雨が降る Heavy rains fall from time to time

小暑Shōsho / Minor heat　7/7頃

梅雨が明け、本格的な暑さが始まる頃。The rains end; true heat begins.

温風至 あつかぜ いたる 熱い風が吹きはじめる Hot winds begin to blow
蓮始開 はす はじめてひらく 蓮の花が開きはじめる The lotus begins to bloom
鷹乃学習 たか すなわち わざをならう 鷹の幼鳥が飛ぶことを覚える Young hawks learn to take wing

処暑Shosho / Heat subsides　8/23頃

暑さがおさまり始める頃。The heat begins to relent.

綿柎開 わたのはなしべ ひらく 綿を包む萼が開く The calyx around the cotton opens
天地始粛 てんち はじめて さむし ようやく暑さが鎮まる At last the heat begins to ease
禾乃登 こくもの すなわち みのる 稲が実りはじめる The grain begins to ripen

立秋Risshū / Autumn begins　8/7頃

暦の上で秋が始まる日。残暑の中に秋の気配。Autumn begins on the calendar, felt faintly within the lingering heat.

涼風至 すずかぜ いたる 涼しい風が立ちはじめる A cool wind begins to stir
寒蝉鳴 ひぐらし なく 蜩が鳴きはじめる The evening cicadas begin to cry
蒙霧升降 ふかききり まとう 深い霧が立ちこめる A deep fog settles over the land

秋分Shūbun / Autumn equinox　9/23頃

昼夜の長さが等しくなる日。秋の彼岸の中日。The autumn equinox.

雷乃収声 かみなり すなわち こえをおさむ 雷が鳴りやむ The thunder falls silent
蟄虫坏戸 むし かくれて とをふさぐ 虫が巣ごもりの支度をする Insects seal themselves away for winter
水始涸 みず はじめて かるる 田の水を落としはじめる The paddies are drained of water

白露Hakuro / White dew　9/8頃

草葉に白い露が宿り始める頃。White dew settles on the grasses.

草露白 くさのつゆ しろし 草に降りた露が白く光る Dew settles white upon the grass
鶺鴒鳴 せきれい なく 鶺鴒が鳴きはじめる The wagtails begin to call
玄鳥去 つばめ さる 燕が南へ帰ってゆく The swallows leave for the south

霜降Sōkō / Frost descends　10/23頃

霜が降り始める頃。紅葉の盛りへ。First frosts; foliage at its peak.

霜始降 しも はじめてふる 霜が降りはじめる The first frost descends
霎時施 こさめ ときどきふる 小雨がときおり降る A light rain falls now and then
楓蔦黄 もみじつた きばむ 紅葉や蔦が黄ばむ Maples and ivy take on their colors

寒露Kanro / Cold dew　10/8頃

露が冷たく感じられる頃。秋が深まる。The dew turns cold; autumn deepens.

鴻雁来 こうがん きたる 雁が渡ってくる The geese come from the north
菊花開 きくのはな ひらく 菊の花が開く The chrysanthemums open
蟋蟀在戸 きりぎりす とにあり こおろぎが戸口で鳴く Crickets chirp by the doorway

小雪Shōsetsu / Minor snow　11/22頃

わずかに雪が舞い始める頃。The first light flurries of snow.

虹蔵不見 にじ かくれて みえず 虹を見かけなくなる Rainbows are seen no more
朔風払葉 きたかぜ このはをはらう 北風が木の葉を払う The north wind sweeps the leaves away
橘始黄 たちばな はじめてきばむ 橘の実が黄ばみはじめる The tachibana fruit begins to yellow

立冬Rittō / Winter begins　11/7頃

暦の上で冬が始まる日。Winter begins on the calendar.

山茶始開 つばき はじめてひらく 山茶花が咲きはじめる The sasanqua camellia starts to flower
地始凍 ち はじめてこおる 大地が凍りはじめる The earth begins to freeze
金盞香 きんせんか さく 水仙の花が香りはじめる The narcissus begins to scent the air

冬至Tōji / Winter solstice　12/22頃

一年で最も夜が長い日。ここから日が伸びる「一陽来復」。The longest night — and the light's return: ichiyō-raifuku.

乃東生 なつかれくさ しょうず 夏枯草が芽を出す The summer-withering grass sends up shoots
麋角解 おおしかの つの おつる 大鹿の角が落ちる The great deer cast off their antlers
雪下出麦 ゆきわたりて むぎのびる 雪の下で麦が芽を伸ばす Wheat rises beneath the snow

大雪Taisetsu / Major snow　12/7頃

本格的に雪が降り積もる頃。Snow begins to fall in earnest.

閉塞成冬 そら さむく ふゆとなる 天地の気が塞がり冬となる The sky closes and winter arrives
熊蟄穴 くま あなにこもる 熊が冬眠に入る Bears enter their winter sleep
鱖魚群 さけのうお むらがる 鮭が群れをなし川を上る Salmon crowd the rivers upstream

大寒Daikan / Major cold　1/20頃

一年で最も寒さの厳しい頃。The year's deepest cold.

款冬華 ふきのはな さく 蕗の薹が花を咲かせる The butterbur sends out its buds
水沢腹堅 さわみず こおりつめる 沢の水が厚く張りつめる The mountain streams freeze hard
鶏始乳 にわとり はじめて とやにつく 鶏が卵を産みはじめる The hens begin to lay their eggs

小寒Shōkan / Minor cold　1/5頃

寒の入り。寒さが厳しくなり始める。The cold season opens.

芹乃栄 せり すなわち さかう 芹が盛んに育つ Water dropwort grows lush
水泉動 しみず あたたかを ふくむ 地中で凍った泉が動きはじめる The frozen springs begin to move
雉始雊 きじ はじめてなく 雉の雄が鳴きはじめる The cock pheasant begins to cry

雨水Usui / Rain water　2/19頃

雪が雨に変わり、氷が解け始める頃。Snow turns to rain; ice begins to melt.

土脈潤起 つちのしょう うるおいおこる 雨が大地を潤しはじめる Rain begins to soften the awakening earth
霞始靆 かすみ はじめてたなびく 霞がたなびきはじめる The first haze drifts across the land
草木萌動 そうもく めばえいずる 草木が芽吹きはじめる Grasses and trees begin to sprout

立春Risshun / Spring begins　2/4頃

暦の上で春が始まる日。寒さの底で春の気配が兆す。The calendar's first day of spring — a hint of warmth at winter's coldest.

東風解凍 はるかぜ こおりをとく 春風が川や湖の氷を解かしはじめる The spring wind begins to thaw the frozen rivers
黄鶯睍睆 うぐいす なく 山里で鶯が鳴きはじめる Bush warblers start to sing in the hills
魚上氷 うお こおりをいずる 割れた氷の間から魚が跳ねる Fish leap between the breaking ice

春分Shunbun / Spring equinox　3/20頃

昼夜の長さが等しくなる日。彼岸の中日。Day and night in equal measure — the spring equinox.

雀始巣 すずめ はじめてすくう 雀が巣をつくりはじめる Sparrows begin to build their nests
桜始開 さくら はじめてひらく 桜の花が咲きはじめる The first cherry flowers begin to bloom
雷乃発声 かみなり すなわちこえをはっす 遠くで雷が鳴りはじめる Thunder rumbles faintly in the distance

啓蟄Keichitsu / Insects awaken　3/5頃

土中で冬ごもりしていた虫が這い出す頃。Insects wake and emerge from their winter earth.

蟄虫啓戸 すごもりむし とをひらく 冬ごもりの虫が出てくる Insects wake and leave their winter shelter
桃始笑 もも はじめてさく 桃の花が咲きはじめる The first peach flowers begin to bloom

穀雨Kokuu / Grain rain　4/20頃

穀物を潤す春の雨が降る頃。Spring rains that nourish the grain.

葭始生 あし はじめてしょうず 葦が芽を出しはじめる Reeds send up their first shoots
霜止出苗 しも やんで なえいずる 霜が終わり苗が育つ The frost lifts and rice seedlings rise
牡丹華 ぼたん はなさく 牡丹が大輪の花を咲かせる Peonies open their great blossoms

清明Seimei / Clear and bright　4/5頃

万物が清らかで生き生きとする頃。花の盛り。All things clear and vivid — blossoms at their height.

玄鳥至 つばめ きたる 燕が南から渡ってくる Swallows arrive from the south
鴻雁北 こうがん かえる 雁が北へ帰ってゆく The geese depart for the north

小満Shōman / Grain fills　5/21頃

草木が茂り、生命が満ち始める頃。Life swelling — grasses and trees filling out.

蚕起食桑 かいこ おきて くわをはむ 蚕が桑を盛んに食べはじめる Silkworms begin to eat the mulberry leaves
紅花栄 べにばな さかう 紅花が盛んに咲く Safflowers come into full bloom
麦秋至 むぎのとき いたる 麦が実り黄金色になる The wheat turns golden and ripe

立夏Rikka / Summer begins　5/5頃

暦の上で夏が始まる日。新緑がまぶしい。Summer begins; the new green dazzles.

蛙始鳴 かえる はじめてなく 蛙が鳴きはじめる Frogs start to call
蚯蚓出 みみず いずる 蚯蚓が地上に這い出る Earthworms come up to the ground
竹笋生 たけのこ しょうず 筍が生えてくる Young bamboo shoots push up

夏至Geshi / Summer solstice　6/21頃

一年で最も昼が長い日。The year's longest day.

乃東枯 なつかれくさ かるる 夏枯草が枯れてゆく The summer-withering grass fades
菖蒲華 あやめ はなさく 菖蒲の花が咲く The irises come into flower
半夏生 はんげ しょうず 半夏（烏柄杓）が生える The hange plant appears

芒種Bōshu / Grain in ear　6/6頃

稲や麦など芒のある穀物の種を蒔く頃。Time to sow the bearded grains.

蟷螂生 かまきり しょうず 蟷螂が生まれ出る Mantises are born
腐草為蛍 くされたるくさ ほたるとなる 朽ちた草から蛍が舞う Fireflies rise from the decaying grass
梅子黄 うめのみ きばむ 梅の実が黄ばみ熟す The plums ripen to yellow
