7月・8月　いま

木槿むくげ　Rose of Sharon 朝ひらき夕にしぼむ一日花。夏の茶席の代表。 The one-day flower — summer's quintessential chabana.

桔梗ききょう　Bellflower 星形の青紫。秋の七草を先取りして。 A star of blue-violet, ahead of autumn's seven grasses.

撫子なでしこ　Fringed pink 可憐の代名詞。大和撫子の名の元。 Delicacy itself — namesake of the ideal of grace.

夏椿なつつばき　Japanese stewartia 沙羅とも呼ばれる白い一日花。 Also called shara — a white flower that lives one day.

水引みずひき　Mizuhiki flower 紅白の細い花穂を祝いの水引に見立てて。 Thin red-and-white spikes, likened to ceremonial cords.

秋海棠しゅうかいどう　Hardy begonia うつむく淡紅。晩夏の陰に涼を置く。 Nodding pale pink — coolness set in late summer's shade.

9月・10月

萩はぎ　Bush clover 秋の七草の筆頭。こぼれる紅紫。 First of autumn's seven grasses — spilling crimson-purple.

尾花おばな　Silver grass すすきの穂。月にはこれを。 Pampas plumes — the companion of the moon.

女郎花おみなえし　Golden lace 黄の小花を粟に見立てた古名も。 Tiny gold flowers once likened to millet.

吾亦紅われもこう　Burnet 「われもまた紅」と名乗る暗紅の穂。 Dark crimson heads that declare, "I too am red."

竜胆りんどう　Gentian 秋空を映す濃い青。 A deep blue that mirrors the autumn sky.

秋明菊しゅうめいぎく　Japanese anemone 貴船菊とも。秋風に白がゆれる。 Also called Kibune chrysanthemum — white swaying in autumn wind.

11月・12月

西王母椿せいおうぼつばき　Seiōbo camellia 炉開きのころに咲く、桃色のふくよかな椿。 A soft pink camellia that opens for the hearth-opening season.

初嵐椿はつあらしつばき　Hatsuarashi camellia 白一重の端正。炉の季節の先駆け。 A trim single white — herald of the hearth months.

白玉椿しらたまつばき　Shiratama camellia 白玉のような蕾を一輪。 A single bud like a white jewel.

照葉てりは　Glossed leaves 紅葉した照りのある葉を、花に代えて。 Glossy tinted leaves, placed in the flower's stead.

石蕗つわぶき　Leopard plant 日陰に黄を灯す晩秋の花。 Late autumn's yellow lamp in the shade.

1月・2月

侘助椿わびすけつばき　Wabisuke camellia 小輪一重の椿。利休の時代から茶席随一とされる。 A small single-petaled camellia, prized above all since Rikyū's day.

梅うめ　Plum blossom 寒中に香りで春を告げる。蕾がちの枝を。 It announces spring by scent in the cold; choose branches still in bud.

水仙すいせん　Narcissus 雪中花とも。凛とした立ち姿と香り。 Also called the snow flower — upright, fragrant, composed.

蝋梅ろうばい　Wintersweet 蝋細工のような透ける黄の花。 Translucent yellow blooms like carved wax.

万作まんさく　Witch hazel 「まず咲く」が名の由来と伝わる早春の花。 Said to be named for blooming "first" in earliest spring.

猫柳ねこやなぎ　Pussy willow 銀色の芽が春の光をまとう。 Silver catkins that catch the first spring light.

3月・4月

桃もも　Peach blossom 雛の節句に。ふくらかな紅。 For the Doll Festival — a soft, full pink.

菜の花なのはな　Rape blossoms 野の明るさをひと枝だけ席に。 A single stem of the field's brightness.

貝母ばいも　Fritillary うつむいて咲く編笠百合。楚々とした茶花の代表。 The nodding "braided-hat lily" — quiet grace itself.

雪柳ゆきやなぎ　Thunberg spirea 枝いっぱいの白を、こぼれるままに。 White along the whole branch, left to spill as it will.

山吹やまぶき　Kerria 八重の黄が春風に揺れる。 Layered gold swaying in the spring wind.

利休梅りきゅうばい　Pearl bush 名に利休を戴く清楚な白。茶花として愛される。 A pure white bearing Rikyū's name — beloved in the tea room.

5月・6月

杜若かきつばた　Rabbit-ear iris 水辺の青紫。伊勢物語の花。 Blue-violet at the water's edge — the flower of the Tales of Ise.

大山蓮華おおやまれんげ　Oyama magnolia うつむく白い大輪。森の気品。 A great white bloom that bows its head — the forest's nobility.

鉄線てっせん　Clematis 針金のような蔓に、涼しい六弁。 Cool six-petaled stars on wire-thin vines.

空木うつぎ　Deutzia 卯の花。初夏の垣根を白く染める。 The unohana — whitening early-summer hedges.

京鹿子きょうがのこ　Meadowsweet 鹿の子絞りのような淡紅の泡沫。 A froth of pale crimson, like kanoko-dyed silk.

山法師やまぼうし　Kousa dogwood 白い総苞を僧の頭巾に見立てた名。 Named for white bracts likened to a monk's hood.
